No no no, it isn't a harness it is a thing that helps you hang on when riding bareback. It goes up over the wither area and under the stomach.

surcingle is what you have on saddles though as a double girth..... Unless there are two ways to use them..

no, a surcingle is sometimes used for lounging a horse, if you want to control his headset.

Well I did use one in my first lesson in a new barn to test my seat... then it wasn't really for the bare backness.

my worst fall was probably, well, actually there is 2, 1 from a 17.2 chesnut gelding, i was just pottering about, i had the usual, hat and back protector. he was fantastic, we walked, trotted cantered and i was walking him off and thought, lets have 1 more quick trot so there we were trotting i went into sit trot to bring him back to walk and he spun out of nowhere and started bucking and broncing and i managed to sit for about 10 or so, then he did the biggest leap and flying buck i have ever seen/ridden in my life and that was it, i was a gonner, he threw me clear about 7/8 foot apparently (my friends and instructor were watching). i was unconcious for about and hour and a half, i had to be air lifted to hospital because they thought i broke my back, which luckily i didnt it just twisted my spine in a wierd way (which has now been put right thank god) i spent 2 months in hospital it hurt but it was funny after the pain went the other is from a 28 years old little back heinz gelding with a star and a snip called Starlight and he is my little old man, i would give my life for this pony, i love him more than my own i think!!! we were cantering along the gallops and 4 speeding cars came 1 side, up the back of him (not meant to be there as its a bridleway/private land ) and 2 horses live in the field next to it, they cam charging up the other side of him and he freaked, jumped into the middle of the road and as he jumping sidewards into the road i went under him but took his legs out by accident and he landed upside down on top of me and his rump was on my head. he grazed his knees but tluckily that was it, he smashed my hat in half (it was just my pottering around hat, luckily not my show hat) and i had a fat lip, bruised from head to toe but i was fine, had 2 get my boss to come and get me with the trailer but star wouldnt go in because he didnt want toleave me, he pulled me out of the road even though he has a weak mouth and a strong bit (because he taks of sometimes) he is my ittle saviour, if he hadnt of pulled me off the road, i would of been run over thats my 2 worstfalls, sory they were really long =S

OH, i thought i might share a story with you all: my boyfriend had a pony named Buddy...he was a nut, but my boyfriend loved him. he drove this pony, he was a large halflinger gelding. he was always very nerveous at shows, but my boyfriend handled him well. at our 4-H fair, he gpt stung by a bee while my boyfriend was getting ready for his class...the pony FLIPPED OUT! he was bucking and going crazy. this caused other horses practicing to freak, leading many young kids to fall off their horses. i was in the arena showing at the time. everyone was OK, except the cart. my boyfriend handled it well and said, its ok he got stung, ill give him another chance...unfotunately, that chance came and went.... my boyfriend did well at his class at fair and qualified for state. at the state show, i was helping get him in the arena. the pony hd driven in the arena the night before to practice and was fine. he entered the class fine, a ittle jumpy as he always is. in a matter of seconds, i turned away to go find a seat.....next thing i hear people screaming. i turn around and there is buddy bucking and freaking out, running over small kids and ponys. my boyfriend go smashed into the cement wall and was trampled. buddy continued jumping over othe rponies, WITH HIS CART STILL ATTATCHED! i remember running into the arena almost getting trampled. i was so worried for my boyfriend. he was fine, and stood up and caught buddy by the bridle in full gallop. no one was hurt badly, some carts were damaged. that was the last straw, and since then he has sold buddy. if you think you have been scared out of your mind, you have no idea what i went throught hat day. i thought i lost the love of my life. horses can be dangerous, so please everyone, be careful!!! and stay away from a crazy chestnut haflinger pony named buddy! =]
