Yeah, I know how you feel. My old trainer's POA, Molly, was the cutest little thing but she HATED being ridden by anyone other than Cody. (Her owner) One time she was all tacked up because she was giving these little kids pony rides, then my old trainer was just like, "Go walk her out" to me, so I got on and she was a dream to ride, she walked trotted and cantered and I didn't even use a crop! No one was watching us, but then these other two kids who I am friends with, they came in and brought a crop and were like, "Oh she is so bratty!" And they kept hitting her with the crop. I got really frustrated because she wouldn't trot anymore!

its rediculous to think you can bully a horse into doing something, but so many people do... most people i know dont even try riding without a crop, just use one because they assume every horse needs it

Yeah. That is sad. Did I tell you about my last riding lesson where the horse didn't want to walk? LOL God that was fun!

Well, the horse (Peggy Sue a.k.a Suzy Q) was recently bought by a beginner rider whom my trainer is friends with. She is used to pinchy legs, tight reins, etc, so when I got on her, she was really excited to be carrying an experienced rider, plus I weigh in at a mere 70 pounds, so she was off like a rocket! My trainer was like, "Are you okay? Want to make her slow down?" And in my head I was like, "Heck no!" LOL I LOVE fast horses!

Yeah. I feel bad pulling reins back, especially doing a one-rein-stop (familiar with it?) when you pull the horses head around so they are forced to do a small circle till they listen to you... I'd never heard of it till my new trainer told me about it. She also taught me emergency dismount... let's not go into details on that one... lol!

I hate people who use whips. I think that it's just a way to put a horse's self esstem down. They have feelings too, & I hate people who don't see that. Horses also have big minds, so they sometimes know what they like, dislike, & what they actualy want to do insteads of another thing.

I only use whips when longing, and I don't hit the horse with them. I'm really small... and the whip is long... lol I'm still working on getting it to crack!

i use lounge whips, too..i have used a short crop while riding if i forget my spurs at home...i do not abuse my horse, i just hold it an inch away from him and its enought o get him going. =] you dont need to hit him. so if you use it right, its a good thing!

spurs are also not a bad thing...my horse is very lazy and i use them just like a crop..just wearing them helps a load. =] dont even have to touch him with them.

Crops also help when your horse gets distracted, lol. Like when he is gazing absentmindedly out of the ring, you can wave it next to his head and he will suddenly be focusing on you! TA-DA! lol
