i know this is gonna sound quite wierd, but does anyone ever watch the showjumping on tv and cringe at the sight of the riders? of course, i've never been a pro showjumper and i'm probably wrong but pretty much every rider who comes on is stiff through the lower back, with hands like fists! there seems to be nothing soft about showjumpers, nothing flowing. not saying that i could do it any better (we'd all get a good laugh from seeing me try!) but it does seem to suggest the talent is in the horse....
and interesting example was the dressage day of eventing i was watching, and i was noticing how stiff and "loudly" all the entrants were riding... then one woman comes in and i was thinking "now here's someone with a classical seat, she's a great rider" and it noted in the commentary that she was the only eventer who first learned dressage, all the others had come from showjumping backgrounds then learned the rest. funny thing is, she didnt score any better than anyone else! dont you think all riders should have a real grasp of the fluid quiet partership, even outside of dressage?

i hadn't noticed, but i dont watch it much....but i would say the stress from competing in public on a horse who probably isn't the esiest plod ever to be alive lol, would make them tense, and also they would have to curb the horse as it came off the jump so that it would come round for the next jump etc.

Reef, have you noticed how high those jumps are? I mean, the riders probably wouldn't do all to well in other areas of equestrian sports, you are right there, but they have to have an AWESOME seat to make it over those 6 foot jumps without falling! I'd go flying over the horse's head!

lol i wouldnt know, never been a horse that could jump like that! last time i was watching, one of the riders completely fell onto the horse's neck on landing, and the commentators never even mentioned it. i know the jumps are big but if you recover on landing you must have an amazing horse to get away with it
