Yeah I wonder... I bet it depends on the horse. I mean, shetlands probably prefer going trail riding in a western saddle than jumping 5 feet, but hey you never know! *tries to picture a shetland jumping that high*

ive learnt to ride english style (which to most americans means i must be gay) - im not incidentally (no offence to any americans out there), and i have ridden western style and i hate their saddles lol. bareback riding iove done some aswell, but its mostly just english style in the school and hacking :-)

OMG you haven't? I love western saddles, they take away some of the connections with the horse but they are oh so comfy and safe! Especially when your horse is going beserk and you need something to hold on too.... LOL been there done that!

umm, about the martingale thing first.....i only ride with one cos it keeps my horses head down, not beacuse its orthodox lol - all the horses i know dont have one unless they need it....anyway, just a thought about the western, i went on a holiday in france where u live in a small cottage for a week and you go riding in the french countryside (kin the south of france) for 4 hours per day on western saddles, and they were terrible lol. the ones i had was like two bars with a whole down the middle with a sheeps skin over it (which kept falling off ) and the other style was like an english saddle in its shape but just completely rock hard leather, very uncomfortable on the old seat bones. especially for 4 hours per day for a week lol

also another point, u dont really need lessons to ride western, like with me i had leanrt english and just turned up to this holiday place, and u just get on, get used to longer stirrups and necking for steering, it doesn;t take long to get the knack of it. bout 10 minutes lol ;-) . and yeah the saddles are safe, like roman cavalry saddles lol - its hard to fall off

tough decision...actually my style is a mix of english, western and bareback. i normally don't go to championchips or things like that. in germany we call that style "free-time-riding". i don't know if there's a word for that in english

true, i very rarely ride in a martingale if i can help it. as few gadgets as possible seems to work best most of the time, i find
the holiday thing sounds like a good idea, i'd love to try it. was it a really professional place? because maybe the saddles were uncomfortable if they were the cheapest the place could get hold off, you get some horrible tack in holiday camp places!
