How do you feel about using spurs on your horse?
I personally don't think its a bad thing as long as you learn how to use them and use them properly. They really help with getting my horse to respond. If I don't use them then my legs end up getting really tired by the time I'm done.

I always have my rollers on, 24/7, never take them off of my boots. Personally I do not like watching younger people (though I am young you have to admit from this certain age they are a bit irresponsible, because I know I was and it was just a year ago) sixteen and under should not use roller spurs. When I watch them in the campdraft or roping or what ever, they do not roll the spurs. They either just kick, and stab the horse with them, or cut them going a long a horizontal stride; instead of going vertical, up and down.

aww poor horses........ well i'm 15 and my trainer has just started me on spurs and she's only had me squeeze with them, lightly tap with em when squeezing didn't work and then we moved onto rolling them horizontally up my horses side.... i'm so afraid i'm going to hurt him tho lol

i use english spurs and ball spurs. they help me cue my horse because he is very sensitive to pressure. spurs are ok if you use them for what they're for: an extension of your leg.

I only use spurs (tom-thumb) on one horse. He REALLY needs them, but not bad enough to need rollers ect, just little baby spurs.

Why would you use spurs horizontally? I always have my rollers because when any horses isn't cutting properly, you don't have the time to fix it up, you need them to do it then and now....

Yes, You are right. Horizontally is right.
I don't like to use spurs because of what I have seen little kids do to horses and pones. I am not very good at riding simply because I never got a vary good teacher, and also It was never the same one.

thanks for confirming that i was right i thought i was but for all i knew i could be thinking opposite. lol
I've seen a really damaged horse because of spurs you don't even touch her with your feet you literally squeeze with your thighs to get her to do what you want she is a really awesome horse.
As for not having a good and consistant trainer try to find a stable in your area and you will get the same instructor and most likely the same horse each time unless of course your trailer your own horse to them. Or you could even find someone who will come to you. Thats what I did and its been working out wonderfully.

I follow the ribs with my spurs up and down, toward the sky then down to the Earth; vertical. Not toward the chest of the horse then toward the rump horizontal..... What type of spurs do you guys use? These are my old spurs (I have bigger rollers now)
